SOUL inspires local high school student involvement
Wearing monochromatic black shirts, the students at Rogers High followed along as Kennel Board members lead them in a reprise of “Zombie Nation.”. Interspersed throughout the crowd of students were members of GU’s club men’s and women’s basketball teams. The occasion is SOUL, the result of a collaborative effort between the Comprehensive Leadership Program (CLP), Kennel Board and a number of other clubs and programs from GU.

Two-alarm fire at Wash and Dry on Hamilton and Nora
A fire at Wash and Dry on Hamilton Friday night resulted in a collapsed roof and the shutdown of the street. No one has been hurt. The fire, which is believed to have started at around 8 p.m. according to Fire Chief Bobby Williams, forced the evacuation of nearby apartment complexes. Williams said that power to the block west of the business has been cut for safety purposes.

Inside Black Student Union's continuing campaign for education, awareness and action
It’s Sunday night, and a conference room in the Hemmingson Center has become a stage. The space – usually reserved for meetings and presentations – is filled with shifting, synchronized bodies. It’s a space where laughs come easily, free of expense and expectation. A safe space. For members of BSU, these Sunday meetings represent a chance to be heard and understood – an opportunity Russell says is still missing from campus.

Cuts Two Ways
Mount Spokane's push for an expansion of ski operations has been a source of contention for years. Even after the Washington Parks and Recreation Commission voted in favor of the proposal last month, opinion on the decision remains divided. "Yeah, [Mount Spokane] keeps saying 'compromise,' but we're not sure what they're referring to," Lands Council Director Mike Petersen says.

Adjuncts push for unionization
A union would give adjuncts and contingents an equal legal standing with the administration and a forum through which to express their concerns, according to adjunct professor of philosophy and theology Scott Kinder-Pyle. He argues that unionization will help by organizing adjuncts and contingents under a single banner.

I waited, with quaking, knee-knocking-and-head-fuzzy earnest for The Decemberists to take the stage; an anticipation that reverberated unanimously throughout the room. The O2 Academy in Glasgow — a venue that seemed impossibly large to this small town kid—was ready for its first dose of the merry band of indie rock logophiles in nearly 4 years.

The downtown Spokane interactive art space Laboratory is looking for applicants for its new artist residency program. The program calls for artists with a particular interest in interactive art, or "art that responds to the presence of interaction of the viewer," says Laboratory founder and director Alan Chatham.

Workshop-based art space offers classes at no cost to students
The place is INK Art Space, and the project is Girls Rock Lab. Over the course of four days, girls from ages eight to 14 learned how to play instruments and write songs, culminating in a live performance at the Bartlett the weekend of Aug. 21. The Rock Lab is only one of many workshops put on by INK since its doors opened in April 2013.

University reveals $250 million campaign
Before a Davenport Grand Hotel Ballroom filled with students, faculty, alumni and trustees, university officials and students laid out the plan for GU’s future, to the tune of a $250 million goal. As of the announcement, $183 million has been raised from 23,000 donors. “You are here because you believe in this place,” President Thayne McCulloh told the assembly.

Outsourcing of faculty and mail services on the table
Faculty and mail services will submit a proposal to keep operation of both departments within the university. The review is part of an overarching university goal to increase the efficiency of services, Executive Vice President Earl Martin said. “In this instance, it wasn’t at all about any dissatisfaction or performance,” Martin said.

GU files lawsuit against Daiquiri Factory
In February, the Daiquiri Factory drew frowns for naming one of its drinks “Date Grape Koolaid.”. The implications of sexual assault did not sit well with many in Spokane, including GU students. The suit states that the University considers the publicity associated with the controversy negative and that Pendleton has caused the University “irreparable harm.”.
